In 1910 Canadian Prime Minister Sir
Wilfred Laurier officially opened the first annual Pacific National
Exhibition, known at the time as "The Industrial Exhibition." The Fair
was seen as a showcase of British Columbia to the rest of Canada and
the world, and was the second largest event of its kind in North
America, behind the New York State Fair.
Since the first Fair, the annual event has become the largest annual
ticketed event in the province, and continues to draw in excess of
900,000 visitors during its 17 days in August.

Enjoy the UBC Botanical Gardens 70 acres of plants
from around the world and the Nitobe Memorial Garden, an authentic
Japanese Tea and Stroll Garden.
Canada's oldest
continuously operating university botanic garden, UBC Botanical Garden
was established in 1916 under the directorship of John Davidson,
British Columbia's first provincial botanist. The original mission of
the garden was research into the native flora of British Columbia.
Over the past
nine decades, the mission of UBC Botanical Garden has broadened to
include research, conservation, teaching and public display of
temperate plants from around the world, particularly Asian, alpine and
native plants.

The lookout
looks like a flying saucer stuck atop a high-rise. At 553 feet high,
it affords one of the best views of Vancouver.
A glass
elevator whizzes you up 50 stories to the circular observation deck,
where knowledgeable guides point out the sights and give a tour every
hour on the hour. On a clear day you can see Vancouver Island and
Mount Baker in Washington State.
The top-floor
restaurant makes one complete revolution per hour; the elevator ride
up is free for diners.
Tickets are
good all day, so you can visit in daytime and return for another look
after dark.

aircraft.

"Canada's National Air Show" by the Government of Canada in the early
